Many people often confuse duties of a psychiatric nurse practitioners and counselors. Psychiatric nurse practitioners focus on diagnosing and medication management. They use medication to improve a patient‘s quality of life and may recommend counseling if appropriate. Visits with the nurse practitioner are significantly shorter and less often than visits with counselor. Counselors, on the other hand, use therapy in order to improve a patient‘s quality of life. This takes time and visits are longer and frequent. Often positive mental health outcomes are achieved by combining both counseling and medication.
The first visit with the psychiatric nurse practitioner will focus on your current mental health symptoms, past psychiatric history, review of medical history, review of family history, and formulation of a treatment plan. This visit will last approximately 30 minutes. Counseling will not be conducted by the nurse practitioner. If appropriate, you will be referred to a counselor, and the nurse practitioner will handle medication management.
The first session with a counselor is an opportunity to get to know one another. The counselor may ask what your therapy goals are and areas you need to work on. Together, you will set goals and discuss a treatment plan. This visit usually lasts 1 hour or longer.
After your initial visit, the appointments will be focused on how you’re treatment plan is working for you. These visits will primarily focus on checking your progress and make adjustments as needed. These visits last 15-20 minutes. It is important to let provider know of any changes.
Followup sessions may occur weekly, biweekly, monthly, or however often you and your counselor decide is appropriate. The focus will depend on the individual patient and the goals set by them. These visits are 45 minutes-1 hour.
In psychiatry, emergencies may arise. We will do our best to prevent these from interfering with your appointment time but occasionally they will. Please be understanding.
